In the 17th century, the nuns of the Monastery of the city of Ferrara, drawing inspiration from an ancient recipe of a great Renaissance chef, created a sweet treat to be sent to the great personalities of that period. Cocoa, which had just arrived in Europe with the Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes, was a luxury ingredient for the few and it was used as a precious dust.
A form of skullcap was flavoured with fine almonds, tasty candied fruit and fragrant spices. The skullcap was finally covered with dark chocolate. The Pampapato soon became the most delicious dessert of Ferrara. Enjoy this mouth-watering sweet treat!
